Google Search is officially rolling out a new personalization feature allowing users to designate ‘Preferred Sources’ for the Top Stories carousel. This highly anticipated update, following tests in June, is now becoming available across the US and India, beginning today, August 13, 2025.

The Top Stories section, which appears prominently when users search for news topics, has historically relied on algorithmic selection. With this new capability, users can now specify their favorite websites, ensuring that content from these preferred sources appears more frequently when they publish fresh and relevant articles. These specially chosen publications will be identifiable by a star icon next to their name and may also feature in a dedicated ‘From your sources’ carousel.

Setting up Preferred Sources is straightforward: simply search for a news topic, click on the icon located to the right of the Top Stories section, and select your desired sources. Users have the flexibility to choose as many sources as they like. Google emphasizes that while preferred sources will be prioritized, content from other sites will continue to be displayed, ensuring a diverse news experience.

Internal testing has shown strong user engagement, with over half of participants opting to select four or more sources, highlighting the value users place on this level of customization. Publishers are encouraged to leverage this feature by prompting their followers and subscribers to add their websites as preferred sources on Google Search.
