Former US President Donald Trump has issued a strong demand for homeless individuals to vacate Washington D.C. immediately, vowing to address crime in the capital. This directive was shared on his social media platform, Truth Social, on Sunday, where he stated, “The Homeless have to move out, IMMEDIATELY. We will give you places to stay, but FAR from the Capital.”

Trump also announced a news conference scheduled for Monday, where he plans to unveil a strategy to make the city “safer and more beautiful than it ever was before.” This comes amidst his recent actions, including signing an order last month to facilitate arrests of homeless individuals and deploying federal law enforcement into DC streets last week.

Mayor Muriel Bowser, a Democrat, has pushed back against Trump’s claims, asserting, “We are not experiencing a crime spike.” She criticized comparisons of Washington D.C. to Baghdad, calling them “hyperbolic and false.” While D.C.’s homicide rate remains high per capita, federal data from January indicates the city recorded its lowest overall violent crime figures in 30 years last year.

The former president’s moves follow an alleged attempted carjacking incident involving a former government employee. Trump’s plan, while lacking specifics, has previously included proposals for moving homeless people to “high quality” tents outside cities with access to services. He has deployed up to 450 federal officers and is considering National Guard involvement. The legal battle concerning a similar deployment in Los Angeles is also set to reach a federal court on Monday.
