A DeKalb County police officer was killed and the suspect is dead following a chaotic shooting incident near the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) headquarters and Emory University campus in Atlanta on Friday, August 8, 2025. Officer David Rose, who responded to reports of gunfire, was fatally shot and later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Authorities confirmed the suspect was found dead from a gunshot wound, possibly self-inflicted, after exchanging fire with officers. Police reported no civilians were injured during the incident, although multiple windows of the CDC headquarters were shattered by gunfire. A shelter-in-place order was issued for Emory University and a lockdown for the CDC, where 92 children in a day care center remained unharmed.

The shooting, which began around 4:50 p.m. on Friday, prompted a swift response from multiple law enforcement agencies, including the DeKalb County Police Department, Atlanta Police Department, FBI Atlanta, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, all of whom are actively investigating the tragic event. Four individuals were transported to the hospital for stress and anxiety-related reasons in the aftermath.

Officer Rose is survived by his pregnant wife and two children. DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson described it as a “dark day” for the county. CDC Director Dr. Susan Monarez expressed heartbreak over the attack and announced that Monday, August 11, will be a remote workday for all CDC employees as the investigation continues.
