18-Year-Old Arrested in Fatal UNM Campus Shooting of 14-Year-Old

Albuquerque, NM – An 18-year-old suspect, John Fuentes, has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred early Friday morning at the University of New Mexico’s Casas del Rio dormitories. The incident, which resulted in the death of a 14-year-old male and injury to a 19-year-old, prompted a campus-wide closure and shelter-in-place order on July 25.
New Mexico State Police confirmed Fuentes was taken into custody in Valencia County following a traffic stop. Authorities describe the shooting as an isolated incident. The 14-year-old victim was found deceased at the scene, while the 19-year-old victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries and received treatment at a local hospital.
UNM Police responded to an alarm at the dorms around 1:30 AM on Friday, discovering broken glass and blood. Investigations reveal that four individuals, including the suspect and victims, were reportedly playing video games in a room before shots were fired. The campus, which was hosting new student orientation, has since lifted its shelter-in-place order, though an increased law enforcement presence is expected. State Police are working with the District Attorney to file charges against Fuentes.
