Breaking: Trump Brokers Ceasefire Talks Amidst Escalating Thailand-Cambodia Border Conflict

US President Donald Trump has announced that Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to immediate ceasefire talks, following a recent escalation of border clashes that have claimed at least 33 lives and displaced thousands since fighting erupted on July 24.
Trump revealed his intervention on Saturday, stating on Truth Social that both nations would “immediately meet and quickly work out a Ceasefire and, ultimately, PEACE!”
The announcement comes just days before significant US tariffs on goods from Thailand and Cambodia are set to take effect on August 1, imposing a 36% tax on imports. Trump indicated that while he looks forward to resuming trade discussions, such talks would not be appropriate until the violence ceases.
Despite earlier skepticism from Thailand’s foreign minister regarding third-party mediation, President Trump confirmed speaking with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s acting prime minister, Phumtham Wechayachai. Phumtham has reportedly agreed in principle to the ceasefire. The intervention follows Cambodia’s earlier call for an immediate ceasefire.
Both nations accuse each other of initiating the latest hostilities, with Thailand citing Cambodian drone surveillance and Cambodia alleging Thai military advancements near a disputed Khmer-Hindu temple. The long-standing border dispute between the two Southeast Asian neighbors dates back over a century.
