The women’s dating safety application, Tea, has confirmed a significant data breach, revealing that images, including some used for identity verification, were stolen by hackers. The company stated the breach impacted members who registered before February 2024, affecting approximately 72,000 images.

Despite Tea’s privacy policy promising immediate deletion of verification photos post-authentication, some compromised images included women holding photo identification. The US-based, women-only app, which boasts 1.6 million users, confirmed “unauthorised access” to these sensitive photos.

Further admissions from the company revealed that an additional 59,000 images, comprising posts, comments, and direct messages dating back over two years, were also accessed. Tea, known for allowing women to perform background checks on men and share ‘red flag’ behaviors, has recently seen a surge in popularity alongside criticism for its perceived anti-men stance. The company asserts that the breached photos cannot be linked to specific posts within the app and is working with cybersecurity experts to address the incident.
