Cambodia-Thailand Border Conflict Escalates: Ceasefire Demanded Amid Rising Casualties

Cambodia has urgently called for an “immediate” ceasefire with Thailand as escalating border clashes have resulted in over 30 fatalities, including civilians. Chhea Keo, Cambodia’s ambassador to the UN, stated that his nation seeks an unconditional truce and a peaceful resolution to the ongoing dispute.
Thailand has yet to publicly respond to Cambodia’s proposal and has previously rejected any third-party mediation. The conflict has already led to the declaration of martial law in eight Thai districts bordering Cambodia. Reports indicate that at least 32 individuals – soldiers and civilians – have been killed, and nearly 200,000 people displaced across both Southeast Asian nations, with each side accusing the other of initiating hostilities on Thursday.
On Saturday, Thailand’s military reported new Cambodian attacks near the southern coast, which were subsequently repelled by the navy. Earlier fighting had been concentrated in Thailand’s Surin, Ubon Ratchathani, and Srisaket provinces along the border. Officials in Bangkok confirmed 19 deaths on their side since Thursday, comprising 13 civilians and six soldiers, with approximately 140,000 evacuations. Cambodia’s defense ministry reported 13 fatalities – eight civilians and five soldiers – and over 35,000 displaced citizens.
Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai warned on Friday that the clashes could escalate into full-scale war, noting the use of heavy weaponry and the spread of fighting to 12 border locations. Thailand has also accused Cambodia of firing into civilian areas, prompting the evacuation of villages within rocket range. In response, Cambodia has accused Thailand of deploying cluster munitions, which are widely banned due to their indiscriminate impact on civilian populations. Thailand has not yet addressed these allegations.
