The recent premiere of “Duck Dynasty: The Revival” was bittersweet. While the show marked a return for the Robertson family, a significant absence cast a long shadow: Kay Robertson, matriarch and beloved star, was unable to attend.

Her son, Willie Robertson, revealed to USA Today that Kay’s absence stemmed from a combination of health challenges and the profound grief following the passing of her husband, Phil Robertson, last month at age 79 after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

“Kay is not in the best of health. We’re trying to help her out as much as we can,” Willie shared, adding, “Some of it is she is just depressed. She lost her partner of 60 years.”

Kay’s health struggles have been ongoing. In April, son Jase Robertson detailed a serious fall that resulted in an infected cut, requiring an 11-day hospital stay. He expressed his fear at the time, stating, “We were kind of dealing with the fact that maybe this is it.” A previous fall in February also led to hospitalization due to a substantial injury.

Despite these challenges, Kay appears in an early episode of the revival. The premiere itself concludes with a touching in memoriam tribute to Phil, highlighting the enduring legacy of the couple and their contributions to the show’s success.

The “Duck Dynasty: The Revival” airs on A&E Sundays at 9 p.m. ET.
