Ukraine Rocked by Massive Russian Missile Barrage; Kyiv Drones Target Moscow Airports
Ukraine has once again been subjected to a brutal overnight missile and drone assault by Russian forces, resulting in casualties and widespread destruction across major cities including Kyiv and Kharkiv. Simultaneously, Ukrainian long-range drone attacks have caused significant travel disruptions at Moscow’s airports.
On Sunday night into Monday, Ukraine’s Air Force reported that Russia launched approximately 450 missiles and drones. While the majority were intercepted, 23 strikes hit various locations, and debris landed in 12 areas. Nationwide air raid warnings were issued, with authorities confirming at least two fatalities and 16 injuries within 24 hours. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strikes as ‘an assault on humanity,’ highlighting a kindergarten, residential buildings, and other civilian infrastructure hit in Kyiv. The capital endured an eight-hour alert, with one person killed and six wounded.
Residents described harrowing experiences. Oleksandr Berdychevskyi, 38, recounted explosions that destroyed his Kyiv apartment, leaving him with little. His mother, Liliya Berdichevska, tearfully described the attackers as ‘monsters.’ Kateryna sought shelter in a subway station, noting the panic but also the resilience and care among those sheltering.
Meanwhile, Kyiv’s forces continued their deep strikes into Russia. Over the weekend, thousands of passengers faced delays and cancellations at major Moscow airports due to drone attacks. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated 49 drones were downed between Friday evening and Monday morning, with no reported injuries or significant damage. Other western and southwestern Russian regions also reported drone interceptions.
This latest escalation comes as President Zelensky called for renewed peace talks with Russia this week. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov indicated Moscow’s readiness to move quickly on a deal, but reiterated its commitment to achieving its ‘objectives.’ Previous ceasefire talks in early June quickly collapsed over Russia’s maximalist territorial demands.
