Kyiv endured one of Russia’s largest aerial assaults in recent months overnight into Monday, July 21, 2025, just hours before crucial high-level talks on military support for Ukraine. The extensive drone and missile barrage claimed two lives and wounded 15 others, including a 12-year-old, as confirmed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The capital’s Shevchenkivskyi district saw a drone strike the entrance of a subway station, while the Darnytskyi district experienced fires at a kindergarten, supermarket, and warehouse facilities. This intensified attack highlights Ukraine’s critical need for accelerated Western military aid, particularly advanced air defense systems.

A pivotal virtual meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, co-chaired by British Defense Secretary John Healey and German counterpart Boris Pistorius, is set to address these urgent requirements. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and NATO leader Mark Rutte are among the key attendees, with discussions expected to focus on expediting weapon deliveries, especially Patriot air defense systems, following recent commitments from U.S. President Donald Trump.

Adding to the escalating tensions, Ukraine simultaneously launched its own long-range drone attacks on Russia. Moscow’s Ministry of Defense reported shooting down 74 Ukrainian drones overnight, with 23 intercepted over the Moscow region, underscoring the ongoing aerial tit-for-tat in the conflict.
