Richard Tillman, brother of late NFL star Pat Tillman, has been arrested in San Jose following a fiery crash into the Almaden Valley Post Office early Sunday morning. Authorities suspect the incident, which caused significant damage and destroyed all mail inside, was an intentional act.

The dramatic event unfolded around 3 a.m. on Sunday, July 20, 2025, when a vehicle, allegedly driven by 44-year-old Richard Tillman, crashed into the Crown Boulevard post office. Eyewitnesses reported hearing explosions before the building erupted in flames. U.S. Postal Inspectors confirm that the vehicle caught fire, leading to the entire building being engulfed. San Jose firefighters battled the blaze for hours.

Postal Inspector Matthew Norfleet stated that while a court of law will determine intent, the incident does not appear to be an accident. Tillman was subsequently arrested and booked into Santa Clara County Jail. Investigators are also looking into potential graffiti, “viva la me,” found on the building, believed to have been tagged by the suspect.

The Almaden Valley Post Office is now closed indefinitely, with officials believing all mail inside was consumed by the fire. For customers affected, mail pick-up for PO Box and notice-left mail will be available starting Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at the Willow Glen Post Office, located at 1750 Meridian Ave., San Jose, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Photo identification will be required for all pickups.
