Small, local radio stations across rural America are grappling with severe budget deficits following Congress’ decision to claw back $1.1 billion in federal funds from public media. This move, stemming from former President Trump’s push to slash funding due to perceived political bias, disproportionately impacts vital community broadcasters, many of whom are not NPR member stations but rely heavily on federal support.

One such station is Allegheny Mountain Radio, a cooperative serving Pocahontas County, West Virginia, and parts of Virginia. Despite not being an NPR member, it carries NPR’s daily newscast. General Manager Scott Smith reveals that funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) constitutes up to 65% of their annual half-million-dollar budget. While the station has reserves, Smith warns that operating in the red is unsustainable, potentially leading to staff reductions or even station closures.

Allegheny Mountain Radio provides essential local news, community information, and even lost pet reports to areas with limited internet and phone access. For many, like Monterey, Virginia Mayor Jay Garber, it’s the sole source of daily local information, crucial for alerts on everything from water main breaks to road closures. The station is among nearly 70 small operations nationwide, from Alaska to Mississippi, that depend on the CPB for at least 30% of their budgets.

Despite some listener backlash over playing NPR content, staff emphasize their independence and vital role in connecting isolated communities. They believe these cuts, intended to target perceived bias, are inadvertently harming the very rural communities that often supported the former administration, turning local broadcasters into casualties of America’s polarized political landscape.
