Trump’s Vein Condition: White House Reveals Chronic Venous Insufficiency Diagnosis

The White House has announced that US President Donald Trump has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, a common vein condition. The revelation came during a regular news briefing on Thursday, where Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that the 79-year-old president sought a check-up after noticing swelling in his legs. This diagnosis follows recent public observations of make-up patches on the back of Trump’s hand, which the White House clarified are unrelated to the vein condition, attributing them to bruising from frequent handshaking.
According to a note from White House physician Captain Sean Barbabella, Trump’s condition is described as “benign and common,” particularly in individuals over 70. Chronic venous insufficiency occurs when leg veins fail to efficiently return blood to the heart, leading to blood pooling in the lower limbs. This can result from weakening valves in veins, a natural occurrence with aging. Symptoms include swelling, pain, and itching, though more severe cases can involve skin changes, ulcers, or deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Dr. Matthew Edwards, chair of Vascular Surgery at Wake Forest University, emphasized that while it can be associated with serious conditions, the condition itself is not serious and affects a significant portion of older adults.
President Trump underwent a comprehensive examination by the White House Medical Unit, which confirmed the diagnosis and, importantly, found no evidence of DVT or arterial disease. Dr. Barbabella stated that Trump “remains in excellent health” and reported normal cardiac function. The bruising on his hand was attributed to minor soft tissue irritation from handshaking and aspirin use, part of his cardiovascular prevention regimen. Experts suggest that compression stockings, leg elevation, and lotion can help manage the condition, which is rarely life-threatening.
