Voters in Arizona’s 7th Congressional District have selected their candidates for the upcoming special general election. Democrat Adelita Grijalva and Republican Daniel Butierez emerged victorious from their respective primary races held on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.

Adelita Grijalva, daughter of the late U.S. Rep. Raúl Grijalva, secured the Democratic nomination. A progressive, she campaigned on priorities including upholding democracy, immigrant rights, and protecting access to Medicaid and Medicare, garnering endorsements from figures like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders.

On the Republican side, painting company owner Daniel Butierez won his party’s nomination. Butierez previously challenged Raúl Grijalva in the 2024 election.

Grijalva and Butierez will now face each other in the special general election scheduled for September 23. This election will fill the seat left vacant by the passing of Raúl Grijalva in March. While the deep-blue district is not expected to shift the balance of power in the U.S. House, it is one of three heavily Democratic vacancies that, once filled this fall, could slightly reduce the Republican’s narrow 220-212 majority.
