Tesla Officially Enters India, Opens Mumbai Showroom for Model Y Sales

After years of anticipation and shifting timelines, Tesla has officially launched its operations in India, opening its inaugural “Experience Center” in Mumbai’s central business district. This marks the automaker’s long-awaited entry into one of the world’s largest automotive markets, nearly a decade after CEO Elon Musk first teased the move.
The new 4,000-square-foot showroom, located in Maker Maxity Mall, Bandra Kurla Complex, showcases the Model Y in both rear-wheel drive (RWD) and long-range RWD versions. These initial units are imported from Tesla’s Shanghai facility.
Indian customers can begin ordering the Model Y today for registration in Delhi, Gurugram, and Mumbai, by paying a non-refundable deposit of ₹22,220 (approx. $260). The Model Y RWD is priced at ₹59,89,000 (approximately $68,000), while the long-range RWD variant costs ₹67,89,000 (approx. $79,000). A full self-driving add-on is available for an additional ₹600,000 (approx. $7,000).
Deliveries for the RWD Model Y are projected to commence in Q3 2025, with the long-range RWD variant slated for Q4 2025. To support its launch, Tesla plans to establish four charging stations, including Supercharger posts, in both Mumbai and Delhi. A second Tesla store is also expected to open in Delhi later this month as part of its initial expansion.
Tesla’s entry follows New Delhi’s 2024 decision to cut import taxes on electric vehicles, a policy change that significantly eased the path for the company to bring its cars to the Indian market. While initial imports are from Shanghai, the company also plans to import cars from its Berlin facility once an India-EU free-trade agreement is signed.
