Nigeria Mourns: Ex-President Buhari’s Body Expected Today for Tuesday Burial

The body of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who died aged 82 in a London clinic on Sunday, is expected to arrive back in Nigeria today, July 14, 2025. Preparations are underway for his burial in his hometown of Daura, Katsina state, scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.

Nigeria’s Vice-President Kashim Shettima is accompanying Buhari’s remains from London. Katsina state governor Dikko Radda confirmed the burial plans, stating the body is anticipated to arrive around 12:00 PM tomorrow, Tuesday, with the burial set for 2:00 PM. The ceremony, initially planned for Monday, was delayed to accommodate more attendees. Buhari’s home in Daura is already filled with mourners awaiting the arrival of the former leader’s body.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a seven-day national mourning period in honor of his predecessor, with national flags lowered to half-mast across the country since Sunday. Tributes continue to pour in for the late general, who served Nigeria twice, first as a military leader and later as an elected president, notably becoming the first opposition leader to defeat an incumbent in 2015.
