Deadly clashes have erupted in Syria’s southern Sweida province, resulting in the deaths of over 30 people and nearly 100 injured. The violence, which began between Druze militias and Sunni Bedouin clans, escalated significantly on Monday, drawing intervention from Syrian government forces and prompting Israeli military strikes.

According to the Syrian Interior Ministry, the fighting has created a dangerous state of chaos. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, however, reports an even higher toll, with at least 50 fatalities, including civilians and security personnel.

The conflict originated from a series of tit-for-tat kidnappings and robberies between the two groups. Syrian government security forces, dispatched to restore order on Monday, also faced armed resistance, with some reports indicating their active participation in support of Bedouin clans.

Israel’s military confirmed striking tanks in southern Syria on Monday, asserting its vigilance against Islamist militants near its borders following the fall of former President Bashar Assad in December. Israel has historically expressed concerns for the Druze minority, many of whom reside in Syria, Lebanon, and Israel. The escalating violence highlights the fragile security situation in post-Assad Syria, where different Druze factions are grappling with their role amidst new governmental authorities.
