A recent Israeli strike in central Gaza has tragically claimed the lives of multiple children, including two young sons of Iman al-Nouri, as they waited for vital nutritional supplements at an aid clinic. The devastating incident, which occurred on Thursday, underscores the immense dangers civilians face amidst the ongoing conflict and severe food shortages in the besieged territory.

Iman al-Nouri recounted the harrowing moments when her youngest son, two-year-old Siraj, prompted his older brothers, Omar (nine) and Amir (five), and their 14-year-old cousin Sama, to seek aid. They were sitting outside the Altayara health clinic in Deir al-Balah when the strike hit. Five-year-old Amir and Sama were killed instantly, while Omar later succumbed to his wounds in hospital. Two-year-old Siraj sustained critical head injuries and remains in severe condition, with doctors unable to treat him.

Project Hope, the US-based aid group operating the clinic, confirmed the strike occurred around 07:15, before the facility opened. Dr. Mithqal Abutaha stated that 16 people, including 10 children and three women, were killed in the attack. He condemned the strike as a “blatant violation of international humanitarian law,” emphasizing that the clinic was a UN-recognized, deconflicted humanitarian facility.

The Israeli military acknowledged the strike, claiming it targeted a “Hamas terrorist” and expressed regret for harm to “uninvolved individuals,” stating the incident is under review. However, this explanation is questioned by aid groups, who stress the impossibility of bringing back those lost.

The incident highlights the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, where thousands of children are malnourished due to severe food, medicine, and fuel shortages. The UN human rights office reported 798 killings of civilians seeking food, with 615 near aid distribution sites. For Iman al-Nouri, whose children risked their lives just to find flour, a ceasefire now “means nothing” after her profound loss. The tragedy intensifies calls for greater protection of civilians and unhindered humanitarian access in Gaza.
