Apple’s ongoing refinement of the ‘Liquid Glass’ aesthetic in iOS 26 has hit a snag, with the latest developer beta, Beta 3, drawing significant criticism from users. While Beta 2’s updates were largely accepted, Beta 3’s design modifications have led to widespread frustration, as many feel Apple is stripping away too much of the signature translucent look.

The primary change observed in iOS 26 Beta 3 is a marked increase in the opacity of navigation bars across numerous core applications. Side-by-side comparisons reveal a clear shift from the previously more translucent appearance found in Beta 2. For instance, Apple Music’s bottom navigation bar, once almost transparent, now features a more frosted, opaque look. Similar changes are evident in Safari’s URL bar, the App Store’s navigation bar, and the Podcasts app, where translucency has been significantly reduced or eliminated.

While some apps like Apple TV and Photos show more subtle darkening with less impact on transparency, others like Calendar, Messages, Mail, and Notes also exhibit reduced translucency in their UI elements. Even the Lock Screen and some notifications now feature darker backgrounds. The impact of these changes can vary based on background colors, with the differences being most pronounced against lighter hues. This design pivot has ignited a debate among early adopters, questioning whether Apple is moving away from the very aesthetic that defined ‘Liquid Glass’ and if user feedback will prompt further adjustments before the official public release of iOS 26.
