KERRVILLE, Texas – A desperate search is intensifying today, July 5, 2025, for at least 23 girls from an all-girls summer camp who remain unaccounted for after flash floods ravaged south-central Texas overnight. Parents are frantically using social media to share photos and pleas for information as authorities continue a massive search and rescue operation.

The deadly storm, which dumped nearly a foot of rain, caused the Guadalupe River to swell dramatically, overwhelming Camp Mystic, a riverside Christian camp in Hunt, Texas. While 24 fatalities have been reported across the region, the immediate focus remains on the missing campers, with state officials confirming between 23 and 25 girls from Camp Mystic are still unaccounted for. So far, 237 individuals have been rescued.

Thirteen-year-old Elinor Lester, who was evacuated by helicopter, described the terrifying ordeal, recalling waking to thunder and rising floodwaters. She noted that younger campers’ cabins, situated closer to the river, were the first to flood. Many campers sought shelter on higher ground, enduring conditions without food, power, or running water before rescuers arrived.

Families are gathering at a reunification center in Ingram, Texas, anxiously awaiting news. Elizabeth Lester, Elinor’s mother, expressed her relief that her children were safe but her anguish over the missing. Camp Mystic has assured parents that if they haven’t been contacted directly, their child is accounted for, yet uncertainty plagues dozens of families.

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick has urged Texans to pray for the safe return of the young girls as the community grapples with the aftermath of what survivors are calling a horror story, with parts of the century-old camp reportedly “completely destroyed.” Search efforts are ongoing across the affected Hill Country region.
