European Intelligence Warns of Russia’s Intensified Chemical Weapon Use in Ukraine

European intelligence agencies are issuing urgent warnings about a significant escalation in Russia’s alleged use of chemical weapons in Ukraine. Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans, in a recent interview, described the intensifying deployment of such prohibited substances as “concerning” and noted its alarming normalization and widespread nature on the battlefield.
Reports indicate Russian forces are employing drones to drop choking agents, including chloropicrin – a toxic substance from World War I that can cause severe respiratory distress and be lethal in high concentrations – into Ukrainian trenches. This tactic forces soldiers out, making them vulnerable targets. Ukrainian authorities have reported at least three fatalities directly attributed to these chemical attacks.
The use of chemical and biological weapons is strictly forbidden under international law, including the 1925 Geneva Protocol and the 1992 Chemical Weapons Convention. These recent allegations follow a previous accusation by the U.S. last May, which also cited Russia’s violation of the convention through chemical weapon deployment in Ukraine. Minister Brekelmans has called for more stringent sanctions against Moscow in response to these grave violations.
