With the public beta of iOS 18 now available, iPhone users are getting their first look at a significant upgrade to the Messages app, specifically targeting the persistent problem of unwanted spam texts. This new feature aims to provide a much-needed solution for filtering out unsolicited messages and decluttering your inbox.

While the ‘Liquid Glass’ design and updates to other core apps like Wallet, Music, Notes, Reminders, and Photos have garnered attention, the Messages app’s enhancements are particularly noteworthy for daily usability. Key new additions include conversation backgrounds, group typing indicators, polls, and live translation.

However, the standout improvement is the integrated spam screening tool. As part of Apple’s broader efforts to combat spam, iOS 18 introduces the option to automatically silence texts from unknown numbers and store them in a separate section within the Messages app. Upon enabling this feature, notifications from detected spam texts will be suppressed, and the messages themselves will be moved to a dedicated area, preventing unwanted interruptions.

Users retain full control and access to these screened messages. A new filtering tool in the top-right corner of the Messages interface allows easy switching between different text categories, including ‘Messages’ (main inbox), ‘Unknown Senders’, ‘Spam’, and ‘Recently Deleted’. iOS 18 also provides the flexibility to enable or disable screening independently for ‘Unknown Senders’ and ‘Spam’. Furthermore, a visual prompt on the filters button ensures users are alerted to any screened texts that might require their attention, minimizing the risk of important messages being overlooked.
