Bryan Kohberger, the former criminology student accused of the brutal 2022 murders of four University of Idaho students, has formally entered a guilty plea to all five counts against him. Appearing expressionless in an Idaho courtroom on Wednesday, Kohberger answered “yes” to each victim’s name as the judge asked if he intentionally murdered them.

This significant change-of-plea hearing sees Kohberger admitting guilt to four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary, securing a deal that removes the possibility of the death penalty. Instead, he will serve life in prison without parole for the fatal stabbings of Ethan Chapin, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Madison Mogen in their off-campus Moscow home.

The plea deal, a surprise to some given the prosecution’s strong evidence including DNA and cell phone data, has left some victims’ families divided. While some express a desire for closure, others, like Kaylee Goncalves’ father, voiced frustration over the lack of answers regarding the motive or specific details of the crime, questions that will likely remain unanswered without a full trial. The absence of Kohberger’s family in court was also noted, despite previous indications they would be present for his support.

Sentencing is currently scheduled for July 23, where victim impact statements are expected to be a central focus. Kohberger has waived his right to appeal, ensuring he will serve his sentence within Idaho’s correctional system.
