In a significant shift in US foreign policy, the Trump administration has announced a pause on certain weapons shipments to Ukraine, including vital air defense missiles. A senior White House official confirmed the decision, stating it follows an extensive review of military spending and foreign aid. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reportedly signed off on the review, which has been underway for several months.

White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly stated the move was made “to put America’s interests first.” This decision comes amidst urgent pleas from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for Western allies to bolster his nation’s aerial defenses, following intensifying Russian airborne attacks. Russia has launched near-nightly air assaults on Ukraine in recent weeks, utilizing hundreds of drones and missiles. Just last Sunday, a Ukrainian F-16 fighter jet pilot was killed after his aircraft crashed during a Russian aerial assault, prompting Zelensky to express Ukraine’s readiness to acquire “American systems” for stronger air defenses.

The US has historically been the largest single donor of military aid to Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. However, the trajectory of US support has notably altered since President Trump’s return to power. In April, Europe’s total military aid to Ukraine surpassed that of the US for the first time. This shift follows a previous incident in March when President Trump temporarily halted all military aid shipments after a heated Oval Office discussion with President Zelensky, though aid flows resumed approximately a week later. Last week, during the NATO summit in The Hague, President Trump had suggested the possibility of future Patriot missile system deliveries to Kyiv, signaling a potential shift in his stance on aid. Ukraine currently relies on a limited number of US-made Patriot systems, which are crucial for protecting civilians, but is reportedly at risk of depleting its missile stockpiles for these critical defenses.
