Two men have been formally charged with murder and attempted murder and remanded in custody following a brutal shooting at a wedding party in southeastern France last Sunday that left a bride dead and several others wounded.

The 27-year-old bride was fatally shot, while her groom and 13-year-old nephew sustained injuries when masked gunmen opened fire in a car park outside a village hall in Goult, a picturesque hilltop village. The groom’s sister was also wounded in the attack.

Marseille prosecutor Nicolas Bessone confirmed late Thursday that the two suspects appeared before a magistrate and were charged as part of an organized criminal gang. One attacker was killed during the incident, and two accomplices were apprehended hours later, with a fourth suspect still at large.

While motives are not officially specified, sources close to the investigation suggest the violence may be linked to drug-related score-settling, noting the groom’s alleged ties to drug and organized crime offenses. The suspects are also reportedly linked to a second fatal shooting in Avignon on the same day.

The incident underscores growing concerns over drug-related violence in the region, particularly around Marseille, prompting recent vows from the French government to intensify its fight against narcotics.
