Suspected Meteorite Strikes Atlanta Home After Fiery Descent Over Georgia and Carolinas

A celestial spectacle unfolded over the southeastern United States on Tuesday as a suspected meteor streaked across the sky, culminating in a fragment crashing through the roof of a home in metro Atlanta. The dramatic event, which occurred just after noon, sent shockwaves across north Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, with numerous eyewitness reports of a brilliant ‘fireball’ and a subsequent sonic boom.
Ryan Morrison, director of emergency management for Henry County, confirmed the extraordinary impact. “It pierced through the roof all the way through and cracked through the laminate flooring to the concrete,” Morrison stated, indicating the significant force of the impact. The homeowner, concerned for their small child, has requested anonymity.
Residents across the region reported a loud boom around 12:30 PM, which rattled houses and prompted initial confusion. Many initially attributed the sound to the spate of strong lightning storms that had recently affected the Atlanta area. However, images and videos quickly began to surface, capturing the fiery descent of the object.
The National Weather Service’s Peachtree City station, while not initially detecting the object on radar due to its high altitude, did manage to capture a smoke trail via satellite. Senior meteorologist Dylan Lusk noted the unusual nature of the event, stating, “We’re not experts on this stuff.” He clarified that space debris and asteroid analysis typically fall under NASA’s purview.
