Hey friend, guess what?! The Academy just announced this year’s honorary Oscar recipients for the 2025 Governors Awards, and the lineup is seriously impressive!

This year, they’re honoring four absolute legends: Tom Cruise, Debbie Allen, Dolly Parton, and Wynn Thomas. Seriously, what a power-packed group!

Tom Cruise, the action movie king, is getting an honorary Oscar. While he’s been nominated for four Oscars before (most recently for Top Gun: Maverick), this is a well-deserved recognition of his massive contribution to cinema and his unwavering dedication to the theatrical experience. The Academy specifically highlighted his commitment to the stunt community, which is pretty cool.

Debbie Allen, a phenomenal actress and choreographer, is also receiving the honor. Her work spans Broadway (West Side Story!), TV (Fame and Grey’s Anatomy!), and so much more. The Academy rightly called her a “trailblazing” figure, and it’s so great to see her get this recognition for her incredible career.

Then there’s Dolly Parton! The country music queen and acting icon (remember 9 to 5 and Steel Magnolias?) is receiving the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. This award recognizes individuals who’ve made significant contributions to humanitarian efforts, and Dolly’s work through the Dollywood Foundation, especially her Imagination Library which has gifted nearly 285 million books to children worldwide, is truly inspiring.

Finally, Wynn Thomas, a brilliant production designer whose work graces films like many Spike Lee movies, Hidden Figures, and King Richard, will also receive an honorary Oscar. His visionary work has brought some of the most memorable films to life.

The Governors Awards ceremony itself isn’t televised, but these honorary Oscars are usually acknowledged during the main Oscars ceremony. So, we’ll be seeing these amazing individuals celebrated on the big stage in March!

Pretty awesome, right? I’m excited to see these legends get the recognition they deserve!
