Medical Helicopter Crash on Sacramento Freeway Critically Injures Three, Investigation Launched

A medical helicopter crashed onto a Sacramento freeway Monday evening, critically injuring all three crew members on board. The incident occurred shortly after 7 p.m. on eastbound Highway 50 near 59th Street.
The REACH medical helicopter was carrying a pilot, a nurse, and a paramedic when it went down. All three were transported to area hospitals with critical injuries. Officials confirmed that no vehicles on the freeway were involved in the crash.
First responders from the Sacramento Fire Department found two crew members in the roadway, while a third was trapped underneath the helicopter. A fire captain, aided by bystanders, successfully lifted the aircraft to free the trapped crew member.
REACH issued a statement confirming the situation and the critical condition of its crew, noting there was no patient on board. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office and the California Highway Patrol. The Federal Aviation Administration has also been contacted.
One lane of Eastbound Highway 50 at 59th Street has since been reopened to allow for traffic flow.
