More than 200 hikers are currently stranded on Mount Everest following a severe blizzard, with urgent rescue operations underway. The incident, which began with heavy snowfall on October 5th, has left climbers facing perilous conditions.

One harrowing account comes from the husband of a woman in Shenzhen, China, who began a 12-day trek on Everest’s eastern slope on September 27th. He made a satellite call for help on October 5th, reporting his group was trapped by deep snow at Oga Campsite in the Karma Valley. He described fearing being buried alive if he fell asleep, as continuous snowfall threatened to collapse their tent.

Local county police, already alerted by other stranded hikers, have mobilized rescue teams. Local villagers and guides are also assisting, battling deep snow to clear paths. The husband’s 16-person team, including guides and yak handlers, was forced to retreat to Cuoxuerenma camp, relying on yaks to navigate treacherous snowdrifts. They are expected to reach safety later this afternoon.

The scale of the blizzard and the number of affected climbers underscore the extreme dangers of mountaineering, even for well-prepared expeditions.
