A tense standoff at Los Angeles City Hall concluded peacefully late Friday afternoon after a man, who had crashed his vehicle near the building’s steps, surrendered to authorities. The incident prompted a full evacuation of City Hall and significant road closures in downtown Los Angeles, causing widespread disruption.

The suspect initiated the incident around 4:10 p.m. local time, driving his car into the vicinity of City Hall’s Spring Street steps and subsequently barricading himself inside the vehicle. The Los Angeles Police Department quickly responded, establishing a perimeter, while the California Highway Patrol assisted by closing off-ramps leading into the downtown area.

Mayor Karen Bass confirmed the situation, stating on X, “I’ve been briefed on the ongoing incident outside of City Hall, which is currently being evacuated out of an abundance of caution.” She extended gratitude to first responders and assured continued monitoring of the situation.

After nearly two hours of negotiations conducted primarily over the phone, the individual peacefully gave himself up to police. Authorities confirmed no one in the vicinity was injured during the incident, and investigations into the motive behind the crash and standoff are expected to follow.
