Breaking: Perplexity Unleashes Comet AI Browser for Free, Debuts Advanced ‘Background Assistant’

AI search innovator Perplexity has announced a major strategic shift, making its highly anticipated Comet AI browser available to users worldwide for free. This move intensifies competition with established giants like Google Chrome and emerging AI-powered browsers, including an upcoming offering from OpenAI.
First launched exclusively for its $200-per-month Max subscribers three months prior, Comet has garnered millions on its waitlist. The browser’s core feature is an intelligent sidecar assistant designed to summarize content, answer questions about web pages, and manage navigation, significantly enhancing the browsing experience.
Further enhancing its premium offering, Perplexity’s CEO Aravind Srinivas unveiled a powerful new ‘background assistant’ for Max users at an event on Wednesday evening. This innovative feature acts as a ‘team of assistants,’ capable of performing multiple complex tasks concurrently in the background, such as drafting emails, finding travel deals, or adding concert tickets to a cart. Users can manage and track these tasks via a central ‘mission control’ dashboard and receive notifications upon completion. The assistant also boasts improved ‘connectors’ for seamless integration with other applications on a user’s computer.
While free users gain access to Comet’s sidecar assistant and integrated tools like Discover, Spaces, Shopping, Travel, Finance, and Sports, Max subscribers benefit from high-performing AI models, an email assistant, and early access to new products. Additionally, free Comet users will soon have the option to subscribe to Comet Plus for $5-per-month, a forthcoming AI-enhanced news alternative, which Pro and Max users will receive automatically.
