ALEXANDRIA, Va. – The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia is embroiled in further controversy following the recent firing of two senior prosecutors, sources confirm to ABC News. These dismissals, which include the office’s top national security official, are widely believed by legal professionals within the office to be politically motivated, stemming from the recent indictment of former FBI Director James Comey by a Trump-appointed prosecutor.

Michael Ben’Ary, who led national security cases, was terminated on Wednesday, October 1, just hours after a pro-Trump activist highlighted his past service under former Biden-era Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco on social media. Ben’Ary, a veteran of federal law enforcement for two decades, was notably the lead attorney in the high-profile case against Mohammad Sharifullah, an alleged ISIS-K plotter set for trial in early December.

Additionally, Maya Song, formerly the deputy to Erik Siebert – who himself was ousted two weeks prior under pressure from former President Donald Trump – was fired last Friday, September 26. Song’s dismissal, executed by Siebert’s replacement Lindsey Halligan, came despite her accepting a demotion after Siebert reportedly resisted calls to bring charges against Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James. Her removal also followed right-wing criticism regarding her prior work during the Biden administration under Monaco.

These recent actions are expected to further erode morale within the Eastern District of Virginia office, known for handling many of the federal government’s most sensitive national security cases. The Department of Justice, Ben’Ary, and Song have yet to comment on the developments.
