FBI Director Kash Patel Cuts Ties with ADL Over ‘Spying’ Allegations, Sparks Controversy

FBI Director Kash Patel announced Wednesday that the top U.S. law enforcement agency has severed ties with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), accusing the prominent Jewish advocacy group of spying on conservatives. The decision follows a wave of conservative backlash, notably from figures like Elon Musk, regarding the ADL’s inclusion of deceased right-wing activist Charlie Kirk in its ‘Glossary of Extremism and Hate’.
Patel specifically cited the ADL’s past associations with former FBI Director James Comey, who was indicted last week on charges of obstruction and lying to Congress. Patel claimed Comey had penned ‘love letters’ to the ADL and embedded agents within the organization, which he accused of conducting ‘disgraceful ops spying on Americans’. He concluded his social media post by stating, ‘This FBI won’t partner with political fronts masquerading as watchdogs.’ Patel did not provide evidence to substantiate his allegations.
The announcement comes just a day after the ADL removed over 1,000 entries from its website, citing that many terms were outdated and had been ‘intentionally misrepresented and misused’. This move occurred amidst widespread right-wing outrage over the ADL’s references to Kirk and his organization, Turning Point USA (TPUSA), which the ADL had previously linked to ‘Christian nationalism’, conspiracy theories, and bigoted remarks, despite TPUSA’s rejection of white supremacist ideology.
In a 2014 speech, Comey had lauded the ADL, making its Law Enforcement and Society training mandatory for FBI personnel and partnering with the group on a ‘Hate Crimes Training Manual’, calling its expertise ‘essential’. The ADL, in response to Patel’s remarks, expressed ‘deep respect’ for the FBI and law enforcement, reaffirming its commitment to protecting the Jewish people amid an ‘unprecedented surge of antisemitism’.
