A powerful 6.9-magnitude offshore earthquake has claimed the lives of at least 69 people in the Philippines, officials confirmed on Wednesday, October 1, 2025. The seismic event, which struck late Tuesday at 9:59 p.m. local time, had its epicenter 19 km east-northeast of Bogo City in central Philippines.

Rescue and relief operations are in full swing, with teams from Manila, including doctors and nurses, deployed to the quake-hit region. The Philippine Coast Guard and Air Force are actively involved in the extensive emergency response. Authorities are also searching for three individuals reported missing under the rubble of a collapsed building in Bogo City.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology initially issued a tsunami warning following the disturbance, which was later canceled. The region has since experienced numerous aftershocks, many exceeding 4-magnitude. The earthquake caused significant damage, including cracks in major highways, and even interrupted the Miss Asia Pacific International 2025 beauty pageant in Cebu City, though all participants were reported safe.

Adding to the challenges, Tropical Depression Paolo has slightly intensified and is moving west over the Philippine Sea, with a potential landfall over Isabela or northern Aurora by Friday. This approaching storm is expected to complicate ongoing disaster relief efforts in the wake of the devastating quake.
