Dr. Jane Goodall, the world-renowned primatologist, anthropologist, and tireless conservationist, has died at the age of 91, her eponymous institute announced in a statement on social media on Wednesday. Goodall passed away of natural causes while on a speaking tour in California.

Goodall’s groundbreaking research on wild chimpanzees in Tanzania revolutionized our understanding of our closest relatives. Beginning her work at just 26, she spent decades observing chimps in Gombe Stream National Park, proving that primates exhibit complex behaviors akin to humans, including developing individual personalities, making and using tools, and displaying emotions like love and altruism, as well as violence.

Her discoveries were hailed as monumental achievements in 20th-century scholarship, challenging prevailing scientific views and reshaping the field of ethology. Beyond her scientific contributions, Dr. Goodall became a passionate advocate for environmental protection and animal welfare.

She founded the Jane Goodall Institute in 1977 to advance her vision of a world where people and animals coexist, and later established the Roots & Shoots program in 1991, inspiring young people globally to take action for their communities, animals, and the environment. A United Nations Messenger of Peace since 2002, Goodall continued to lend her powerful voice to the climate crisis and sustainable practices well into her nineties.

Goodall’s legacy extends to inspiring countless women to pursue careers in STEM fields. Her life’s work garnered numerous accolades, including the French Legion of Honor, Japan’s Kyoto Prize, and the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom, cementing her status as one of history’s most influential scientists and humanitarians.
