Dean Confronts Speaker Johnson Over Trump AI Video and Government Funding Standoff

Democratic Representative Madeleine Dean directly challenged Speaker Mike Johnson on the House floor Tuesday, expressing strong disapproval over his perceived inaction on a racist, AI-generated video shared by former President Donald Trump, and their parties’ impasse on government funding.

The confrontation, which occurred just hours before a potential government shutdown, saw Dean criticize Johnson multiple times. She pressed him specifically on Trump’s AI-generated video depicting House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries in a sombrero and mustache, and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer speaking in a fake voice advocating for ‘free healthcare’ for undocumented immigrants, set to mariachi music.

When Johnson responded that the video ‘wasn’t my style,’ Dean retorted, ‘Not your style? It’s disgraceful. It’s racist. You should call it out.’ She emphasized the clear racist implications of the imagery, urging Johnson to demonstrate leadership. Johnson, while acknowledging the interaction and stating it ‘wasn’t his style,’ appeared to attempt to shift the focus to the looming government funding deadline, which he described as ‘the real issue.’ He later told CNN that he ‘disagreed with her perspective on it.’

Dean also expressed disappointment that Johnson had sent House members home amidst the funding crisis, accusing him of contributing to a potential shutdown.
