As government spending negotiations intensify, the threat of a federal shutdown looms, fueled by a heated debate over healthcare funding. However, recent claims by former President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance regarding Democrats’ demands for ‘free healthcare for illegal aliens’ have been fact-checked and found to be false.

Last week, both Trump and Vance took to social media, asserting that Democrats were pushing for healthcare provisions benefiting undocumented immigrants and threatening a shutdown over this issue. Trump claimed Democrats wanted ‘Illegal Aliens, many of them VIOLENT CRIMINALS, to receive FREE Healthcare,’ while Vance stated Democrats ‘demand we fund healthcare for illegal aliens.’

In reality, Democrats are drawing a line in the sand over two critical healthcare priorities that do not involve undocumented immigrants. Their primary focus is extending enhanced federal subsidies for Affordable Care Act (ACA) policies, which are set to expire at the end of 2025. If these subsidies lapse, premiums for Obamacare policies are projected to skyrocket by over 75% on average in 2026, potentially leaving millions more uninsured.

These subsidies, initially enacted in 2021, have been instrumental in making ACA coverage affordable for lower and middle-income Americans, contributing to a record 24 million sign-ups this year. Without them, an estimated 4 million additional people could become uninsured by 2034.

Democrats are also pushing to reverse significant cuts to Medicaid contained in Trump’s previous domestic policy agenda. These cuts, which include the first-ever work requirement for Medicaid and restrictions on legal immigrants’ access, are projected to result in roughly 10 million more people losing coverage by 2034.

It is crucial to note that undocumented immigrants are not eligible for federal health benefits, including ACA subsidies, Medicare, Medicaid, or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). While Medicaid may cover emergency care for undocumented immigrants in some instances, this is not considered comprehensive health insurance coverage and accounts for less than 1% of total Medicaid spending.

The current standoff centers on ensuring affordable healthcare for millions of Americans through existing federal programs, not on providing health coverage to undocumented immigrants, contrary to the misleading claims.
