CHISINAU, Moldova – The pro-Western governing party in Moldova has secured a commanding parliamentary majority following a pivotal weekend election, dealing a significant blow to pro-Russian factions. The vote, widely seen as a stark choice between aligning with the European Union or drifting back into Moscow’s sphere of influence, concluded on Sunday, September 28, 2025.

With nearly all polling station reports tallied on Monday, the pro-EU Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) garnered 50.1% of the vote, ensuring they will hold approximately 55 out of 101 seats in the legislature. This clear mandate allows PAS to continue Moldova’s trajectory towards EU membership without the need for potentially unstable coalitions.

European leaders swiftly congratulated Moldova, hailing the nation’s re-affirmation of its commitment to a Western future amid allegations of widespread Russian interference. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen remarked, “You made your choice clear: Europe. Democracy. Freedom. No attempt to sow fear or division could break your resolve.”

The election took place amidst claims by Moldovan authorities of a vast “hybrid war” waged by Russia, involving alleged vote-buying schemes, over 1,000 cyberattacks, and a sprawling disinformation campaign. Despite these challenges, Moldovan President Maia Sandu emphasized that the outcome proved citizens “can unite when our country’s future is at stake,” reinforcing the “European path” as the surest way to peace and freedom.

PAS campaigned on a pledge to sign an EU accession treaty by 2028, modernize infrastructure, boost incomes, and combat corruption. Analysts view the victory as a critical step for Moldova’s EU integration, though the country is expected to remain a geopolitical flashpoint due to Russia’s ongoing attempts to exert influence.
