A devastating overnight Russian missile and drone attack on September 28 has left at least four people dead, including a 12-year-old girl, and injured over 70 across Ukraine. Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia bore the brunt of the assault, which President Volodymyr Zelensky reported involved nearly 500 drones and over 40 missiles over a 12-hour period.

In Kyiv, a five-story building suffered partial destruction, and multiple districts reported damaged residential and non-residential structures. Among the fatalities in the capital were a nurse and a patient at the Institute of Cardiology, with at least 13 injured in the city and 28 wounded in the surrounding Kyiv Oblast, including three children.

The southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia also experienced heavy bombardment, with Governor Ivan Fedorov confirming at least 27 injuries, including three children, two of whom are in serious condition. A missile directly struck a multi-story building, and nine houses, 14 high-rise buildings, a school, and enterprise facilities were damaged.

Explosions were also reported in Khmelnytskyi Oblast and Sumy, while Poland scrambled fighter jets and closed airspace over Lublin and Rzeszow in response to the widespread attacks. This latest barrage follows a period of intensified Russian aerial assaults, with officials warning Ukrainians to brace for further attacks targeting energy infrastructure as colder months approach.

The incident comes shortly after President Trump’s recent comments on September 25, expressing dissatisfaction with Russia’s actions and stating, “He’s killing people for no reason whatsoever,” despite no new U.S. sanctions being imposed.
