Amazon Prime Settlement: Act Now to Claim Your Share of the $1.5 Billion Refund

Amazon Prime members who were unknowingly enrolled or faced difficulties canceling their subscriptions may now be eligible for a refund from a historic $2.5 billion settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). An estimated $1.5 billion of this settlement has been earmarked for customer restitution, with details on how to claim your portion becoming available as of September 26, 2025.
The FTC’s investigation alleged that Amazon employed deceptive practices, making it challenging for customers to opt out of Prime memberships after signing up. As part of the agreement, Amazon is required to pay $1 billion in civil penalties, marking the second-largest fine in FTC history, in addition to the customer refunds.
Eligible consumers include those who signed up for Prime using the ‘Single Page Checkout’ form between June 23, 2019, and June 23, 2025, and were subsequently enrolled without clear consent or experienced difficulties canceling. The settlement mandates Amazon to implement clearer sign-up and cancellation procedures, including a prominent ‘decline Prime’ button and improved transparency regarding pricing and renewal terms.
While Amazon maintains there was no admission of guilt and asserts many of the required changes were already in place, the company has agreed to the settlement to resolve the case. An independent third-party supervisor will oversee the distribution of the restitution fees to ensure eligible customers receive their refunds. Customers are advised to look for official communications regarding the claim process to secure their part of the settlement.
