The United Nations has officially reimposed sweeping economic and military sanctions on Iran, effective Saturday, prompting immediate calls for de-escalation and negotiation from the UK, France, and Germany. The three European nations issued a joint statement, asserting that the reinstatement of measures was a ‘last resort’ due to Iran’s ‘continued nuclear escalation’ and a perceived lack of cooperation.

UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, alongside her French and German counterparts, urged Tehran to ‘refrain from any escalatory action,’ emphasizing that the sanctions’ return ‘is not the end of diplomacy.’ The sanctions, initially lifted a decade ago under a landmark international deal concerning Iran’s nuclear program, were reinstated after talks on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly failed to yield a resolution that could have delayed the measures.

Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian had previously condemned the reimposition of international sanctions as ‘unfair, unjust, and illegal,’ maintaining that the country has no intention of developing nuclear weapons. However, Iran significantly ramped up its restricted nuclear activities following the US withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2016, a deal former President Donald Trump had criticized as flawed.
