The New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has confirmed that Shane Tamura, the gunman responsible for the fatal July shooting at the NFL’s New York headquarters, suffered from Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). The findings, announced Friday, corroborate Tamura’s own writings, where he claimed to have a traumatic brain injury and accused the NFL of concealing dangers to players’ brains.

Tamura, 27, drove cross-country from Las Vegas before opening fire, killing four people: security guard Aland Etienne, executive Wesley LePatner, police officer Didarul Islam, and Rudin Management employee Julia Hyman. He died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound after firing 47 rounds and killing Hyman on the 33rd floor, approximately four minutes after arriving.

In a statement, the medical examiner’s office detailed “unambiguous diagnostic evidence of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy… in the brain tissue of the decedent,” classifying it as low-stage CTE. They noted that “the science around this condition continues to evolve, and the physical and mental manifestations of CTE remain under study,” without specifying if CTE played a role in Tamura’s actions.

The NFL expressed continued grief for the victims, stating there is “no justification for the horrific acts that took place” and echoing the medical examiner’s sentiment that the science around CTE is still evolving. Police found a three-page note on Tamura claiming his brain injury and asking for his brain to be studied.
