Controversial Oklahoma Superintendent Ryan Walters Resigns, Launches National Anti-Union Effort

Oklahoma’s polarizing Superintendent of Public Instruction, Ryan Walters, has announced his resignation to take the helm of a new conservative education non-profit. Walters, who garnered national attention for advocating the installation of Donald Trump-endorsed Bibles in classrooms and mandating the teaching of 2020 election conspiracies, will now lead the Teacher Freedom Alliance (TFA).
The Teacher Freedom Alliance states its mission is to empower educators to cultivate “free, moral, and upright American citizens.” Walters, who has headed Oklahoma’s public schools since 2022, revealed his departure and new role on Fox News, after teasing the announcement on X with the phrase, “liberal’s worst nightmare is about to become true.”
On air, Walters declared his intent to “destroy the teachers unions” and “build an army of teachers to defeat the teachers unions once and for all,” signaling a plan to nationalize the ideological battles he initiated in Oklahoma. The TFA website prominently features Walters as its new leader, stating, “Walters fearlessly fights the woke liberal union mob. TFA will take the fight straight to the unions and we will not stop.”
During his tenure, Walters consistently pushed a Christian nationalist agenda, advocating for the country’s first Catholic public charter school and even attempting to mandate schools play a video of him praying. He also frequently battled against teachers, accusing them of “woke indoctrination” and proposing an “America first” certification for educators from liberal states. His administration saw the appointment of prominent right-wing figures, including the activist behind Libs of TikTok, to state education committees.
