Logitech Unveils Signature Slim Solar Plus K980: A Light-Powered Keyboard with Dedicated AI Key

Logitech has today launched its latest innovation in input devices: the Signature Slim Solar Plus K980 keyboard. Priced at $99.99, this new peripheral marks a significant return to light-powered technology for Logitech, offering a decade-long battery life without the need for direct sunlight.
The K980 distinguishes itself by drawing power from both solar and artificial light sources, requiring a minimum of 200 lux to charge its internal battery. Once fully charged, the company claims the keyboard can operate for an impressive four months in complete darkness. While initially designed without a USB port or easily swappable batteries, Logitech confirms the battery is safely user-replaceable, with spare parts to be supplied by iFixIt.
Beyond its innovative charging capabilities, the K980 features a standard full-size layout compatible with both Windows and macOS, including a numpad and dedicated media controls. Customization is a key aspect, with the Logi Options Plus app allowing users to personalize function keys, the camera on/off toggle, and a mic mute key. A notable addition is the new AI Launch key, which defaults to activating Copilot on Windows PCs and Gemini on ChromeOS, but can be customized to open ChatGPT, an AI prompt builder, or other Smart Actions within the Logitech app.
The K980 supports simultaneous pairing with up to three Bluetooth devices, enabling seamless switching between them. An optional Logitech Bolt USB transmitter can also be used for connectivity, though it is sold separately. While previous solar models featured playful LED indicators for charging status, the K980 opts for a simpler green-to-red LED, encouraging users to consult the Logi Options Plus app for detailed light level information. This launch follows a trend seen in 2025, with other manufacturers like Lenovo also introducing self-charging wireless keyboards.
