The recent memorial service for Charlie Kirk in Glendale, Arizona, has become a focal point for discussions on political event security, having been designated a Special Event Assessment Rating (SEAR) Level 1. This classification, typically reserved for events like the Super Bowl, mobilized extensive federal and interagency support, leading to security measures likened by experts to one of the most fortified memorial services in recent U.S. history.

Held at State Farm Stadium, which was filled to capacity with 70,000 attendees, and an overflow site hosting an additional 10,000, the event featured remarks from President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and five Cabinet members. Security layers were comprehensive, encompassing everything from airspace control to street-level protections. Highly visible measures included a bulletproof-glass-encased podium area, TSA-like metal detectors, extensive security fencing, road closures, and vehicle checkpoints, supported by a massive presence of law enforcement and private security personnel.

Further, less visible, security protocols included counter-sniper teams, plain-clothes officers, anti-drone systems, explosive detection equipment, K9 sweeps, and sealed drainage openings along motorcade routes. Experts estimate the cost of these measures to be in the millions, comparable to a Super Bowl security bill, despite the stadium authority stressing it was a private event.

However, one aspect of the ceremony, a fireworks display, has sparked debate among security experts. While some online critics questioned its necessity, experts told Fortune that the pyrotechnics were likely more for fanfare than for actual threat prevention. Former FBI operative Eric O’Neill suggested the fireworks were intended to create a ‘tent revival’ atmosphere, arguing that the rarely used bulletproof glass shield offered far more protection than any pyrotechnics could.
