COVID-19 Nimbus Variant: Increased Hospitalizations and a Distinctive Symptom
A new COVID-19 variant, codenamed Nimbus (NB.1.8.1), is driving a recent rise in UK hospital admissions. While the UKHSA confirms its presence, the increase remains relatively small compared to global trends where Nimbus is becoming dominant in several regions.
Key findings include a 9.4% increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations in the week ending May 31st and a 6.9% rise in detected cases in the week ending June 4th. Deaths, however, decreased by 12.5% in the week ending May 30th.
The defining characteristic reported by patients is a severe sore throat described as a “razor blade sensation.” While current vaccines are expected to remain effective against severe disease, Nimbus exhibits increased transmissibility and reduced vaccine efficacy compared to previous variants. The WHO is closely monitoring the situation.
The UKHSA advises home isolation for individuals with suspected COVID-19 symptoms and recommends avoiding close contact with vulnerable individuals if venturing out while symptomatic.
