Gaza City faced its most intense Israeli attacks in two years on Tuesday, triggering a mass exodus as residents fled under a barrage of bombs and bullets. At least 91 people were killed in the city yesterday, with health authorities reporting one bomb struck a vehicle carrying civilians attempting to escape along the coastal road.

Thousands streamed south along al-Rashid Street, laden with belongings, against a backdrop of black smoke rising from destroyed areas. Israeli Minister of Defence Israel Katz declared on X, “Gaza is burning,” as the military accelerated a deadly bombing campaign that has flattened high-rises, homes, and civilian infrastructure, including Aybaki Mosque in the Tuffah neighbourhood.

The United Nations chief condemned the offensive as “horrendous.” Concurrently, a UN Commission of Inquiry concluded on Tuesday that Israel’s war on Gaza constitutes genocide, citing “specific intent” to destroy Palestinians as a people. This landmark finding, after nearly two years of conflict that has claimed over 64,964 lives, has amplified international condemnation.

Amid the escalating crisis, the Israeli army admitted it would take “several months” to control Gaza City, with spokesman Effie Defrin stating, “No matter how long it takes, we will operate in Gaza.” Tanks and armoured vehicles continue to push into the city, while explosive-laden robots are reportedly being used to destroy housing units.

Displaced Palestinians face a bleak future in the already overcrowded al-Mawasi camp to the south, which has itself been subjected to Israeli strikes. International pressure is mounting, with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres calling the war “morally, politically and legally intolerable,” and leaders from France and Ireland urging an immediate halt to the “destructive campaign” and an end to trade with those “practising genocide.”
