Beijing has sharply criticized former US President Donald Trump’s recent proposal for steep tariffs on China, specifically a 50-100% levy, in response to its continued ties with Russia. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, speaking from Ljubljana, Slovenia, on Saturday, September 13, 2025, underscored China’s commitment to peace talks and political resolution of international disputes.

Wang Yi reiterated China’s position that conflict cannot solve problems and sanctions only exacerbate them. “China does not participate in or plan wars, and what China does is to encourage peace talks and promote political settlement of hotspot issues through dialogue,” he stated during a news conference following a meeting with Slovenia’s Deputy PM and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Tanja Fajon.

Trump’s tariff threat, communicated via Truth Social, targets China for its purchases of Russian oil, which he claims undermines NATO’s efforts in the Ukraine conflict. His remarks also alluded to similar tariffs previously imposed on India. Wang Yi, emphasizing China’s role as a responsible nation advocating for multilateralism and the UN Charter, urged Europe and China to foster cooperation rather than confrontation amidst current global complexities.
