Warsaw, Poland – Polish officials today vehemently rejected former President Donald Trump’s assertion that a significant Russian drone incursion into Polish airspace earlier this week “could have been a mistake.” The incident, involving 17 Russian-made drones falling on Polish territory on Wednesday, has heightened tensions and prompted an urgent NATO response.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk, addressing the public on social media, declared, “We would also wish that the drone attack on Poland was a mistake. But it wasn’t. And we know it.” This firm stance was reinforced by Poland’s President Karol Nawrocki, who described the incursion as a deliberate attempt to gauge NATO’s capabilities and determination.

The drone attack, marking a critical escalation since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, saw Polish and Dutch NATO fighter jets scrambled to intercept the unmanned aircraft. Although no injuries or significant damage were reported, the event has been widely condemned by European capitals and the European Union as a calculated Russian test of the alliance’s resolve.

Trump, however, told journalists on Thursday that the incident “could have been a mistake,” a statement that directly contradicts the unified position from Warsaw and its allies. Deputy Minister of Defense Cezary Tomczyk explicitly refuted Trump’s claim, stating, “there’s no question of a mistake – this was a deliberate Russian attack.” Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski further highlighted the gravity, noting that the 19 drones over Poland were part of a broader assault that included over 400 drones and 40 missiles targeting Ukraine on the same night.

In a significant diplomatic move, Poland has requested an urgent meeting of the United Nations Security Council, scheduled for this Friday afternoon, to address the serious implications of Russia’s airspace violation. U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker reiterated American solidarity, affirming that the U.S. stands “by our NATO Allies in the face of these airspace violations and will defend every inch of NATO territory.”
