A student at the U.S. Naval Academy was shot by a law enforcement officer yesterday during a campus lockdown in Annapolis, Maryland. The incident unfolded after a midshipman, mistaking a responding officer for a threat, reportedly struck the officer with a training parade rifle.

The injured student was promptly hospitalized and is currently in stable condition, with expectations for a full recovery. Helicopter footage captured the student being transported via stretcher to a state police helicopter from the campus.

The lockdown was initiated following anonymous online threats posted by a student who had previously been expelled from the academy. Authorities clarified that the expelled student was not physically on campus during the incident, having used an IP address to mask their actual location. The individual believed to be behind the threats was reportedly at home.

Naval Support Activity Annapolis security and local police immediately responded to the academy grounds. This incident occurred amidst a period of heightened campus security concerns, including a reported fatal shooting at a Utah university and unfounded threats targeting several historically Black colleges, which also prompted lockdowns.
